FIRST MOUNTAINS ON DAY 5

Today was my strongest day so far.As some riders are already losing fitness, I am feeling fitter each day. Quite a few guys got on the truck today, mainly because of knee problems. Quite a lot of saddle sores as well. I am also a bit hurting down there, so the rest day coming after tomorrow will be welcome...

We started with a 60 km climb but fairly easy accross the mountains heading west, straight into the desert. Lunch truck was waiting for us at the top of the climb. I did the climb with Jim at a very good pace which gave us the opportunity to join with a strong peloton at the lunch truck. So this meant that afternoon ride was a pure peloton style ride with strong headwind. Relays were kept short and we managed a very good pace all the way to camp, arriving before 14h00! Not bad 138 km done in such a short time is something to be proud off! Nice to arrive early at camp. It gives you plenty of time to get organised with finding a good spot for your tent, chatting with other riders, getting a nice bowl of soup on arrival, and even have a nap... and update you guys via internet.

The mountains were a welcome change from the desert, it is amazing to pedal through this! We all stopped for taking a few pictures as the sun was rising above them, what a scene... We are now one day away from Luxor where we are going to enjoy our first day off! Will do good to our legs as well.

Tonight camp in the desert seems to be under higher security than usual. We have the entire camp surrounded by armed police who seem to be very nervous. They even follow us for going for toilet... A bit anoying, but at least they are looking after our safety.
